Managing metafields in your Shopify store, the store-side half

Managing metafields in a Shopify store Play video
3:22 Published December 2021 Watch on YouTube

Before a metafield can become a marketplace attribute it has to exist and hold a value. This video covers that store-side half: defining metafields in Shopify and filling them on products.

Plan the set in advance. A consistent group of metafields, one per marketplace attribute you need repeatedly, turns listing preparation from a per-product chore into a mapping you configure once.

What you will learn

  • How to define metafields in Shopify and choose sensible types.
  • How to fill metafield values on products.
  • Which marketplace requirements deserve a metafield of their own.
  • Why consistency here saves work in every listing profile later.

Steps shown in the video

  1. Open the metafield definitions in the Shopify admin.
  2. Define the metafields your marketplace listings require.
  3. Fill the values on individual products.
  4. Check the values are consistent across the product range.
  5. Confirm the metafields are visible to apps that read product data.
